Dorset scored the first eye-catching result of South West Counties Championship Week at St Enodoc Golf Club.
Despite boasting regional champion – Weymouth’s Tom Robson – Dorset finished foot of the six-team inter-county match play table at Bristol & Clifton last summer.
Fast forward a year and Dorset turned that result on its head on day one of this summer’s tournament by defeating last season’s unbeaten champions – and English County finalists – Somerset 8 ¼-5 ¾ on the north Cornwall coast yesterday.
Hosts Cornwall – who play Dorset on Friday, final day of the six-day inter-county annual tournament for the region's top amateur golfers – also opened up with a derby win, 8 ¼-5 ¾ over cross-Tamar rivals Devon.
In the opening day’s other derby encounter Gloucestershire scored the biggest win of the day 9 ½-4 ½ against border rivals Wiltshire.
Match of the day over St Enodoc's famous Church Course today pits annual favourites Gloucestershire against yesterday's suprise package, Dorset.
