somerset hockey star simon mantell Somerset’s Simon Mantell was the match-winner as Great Britain beat Pakistan 2-1 in their Champions Trophy opener in Auckland, New Zealand.

Reading forward Mantell roofed the winning 65th minute goal after East Grinstead’s Mark Pearn cancelled out Muhammad Imran’s first half opener.

Imran’s powerful penalty corner flick gave Pakistan the lead in the 31st minute but Pearn showed composure to delicately thread the ball beyond goalkeeper Salman Akbar and two defenders ten minutes into the second half.

As Great Britain piled on the pressure with a series of late penalty corners, Reading’s Mantell made it 2-1 with a shot high into the net from the second phase of a penalty corner.

The result puts Great Britain second behind Australia in Pool A following the Kookaburras’ 3-2 win over Spain.

GB meet Australia tonight (23:05 GMT).
