Cardiff & UWIC warmed up for Sunday’s top of the table EHL Men’s Conference West clash by edging a 1-0 win over cross-city rivals Whitchurch at Sophia Gardens last night.
Luke Hawker’s eighth minute goal against the run of early play was all that separated Wales’ top two teams as Cardiff soared to second ahead of Sunday's home game against runaway leaders Team Bath Buccaneers (Welsh Institute of Sport, 1300).
Keeper Ben Dudley ensured Cardiff kept a clean sheet with some smart saves and a great double stop near the close as Whitchurch sought a way back into the match.
Liam Brignull and Tim Jones went close for Cardiff, while Adam Barker was closest to scoring for Whitchurch, who visit fourth placed University of Birmingham on Sunday (1330).
