MENS HOCKEY Cardiff & Met to the fore again

NOW: Pensions Mens Hockey League logoCardiff & Met made a flying start to their NOW: Pensions Mens' Hockey League campaign, powering away in the second half to win 4-1 at Cheltenham.

Rupert Shipperley's 27th minute open play opener was cancelled out within a minute by Cheltenham stalwart Alex Hay.

Luke Hawker (45 mins) Rhys Gowman (47) and Robin Lovegrove (67) scored Cardiff's second half goals as Jimmy Devney's blues began their Men's Conference West title defence on the front foot.

University of Exeter warmed up for their early-season top of the table trip to Cardiff on Sunday (1300) with an opening 3-0 home win over Guildford.

Edward Matts (21 mins) Josh Godfrey (55) and Nick Cooper (67) scored for last term's Conference West runners-up against a Guildford side who finished third last season.

Newly promoted Isca face a tough opening home game when they entertain Team Bath Buccaneers on Sunday at the University of Exeter Sports Park (12.30).

Isca – back in the national league following a 13-year absence – suffered a 3-2 defeat at University of Birmingham on opening day after trailing 2-0.

Jon Wright's 47th minute goal reduced the arrears for five minutes before Will Selfe made it 3-1.

Adrian Nash scored Isca's second goal in the 65th minute as the Exeter side pressed for a leveller.

Debutant Ed Horler (2, 60pc) scored both Bath Buccs' goals as they beat Havant 2-0 at Millfield School.

• Welsh ace Joe Naughalty scored East Grinstead's 22nd minute opener as they beat Sheffield Hallam 3-0 in the Men's Premier Division.
