PLYMOUTH MARJON HOCKEY MEN

Plymouth Marjon men’s first team will be returning to the regional N4 League following a 7-4 home defeat by Havant in their penultimate England Hockey League Men’s Conference West match.

Defeat keeps Plymouth - who conclude their programme at third placed Guildford on Sunday - six points adrift at the foot of the table and confirms their relegation back to N4 Premier One after a season back in the national league.

Plymouth gave themselves a hill to climb, conceding in the second minute to Havant danger man Ahmed Ezz Mohamed.

“We then played really well for 25 minutes but failed to turn that good hockey into goals,” rued Plymouth assistant coach Jamie Oxley, whose side trailed 4-0 by half time and then 5-0 early in the second half.

The reds responded with four goals in 16 second half minutes – from Lewis Waitt, player-coach Calum Giles (2) and Richard Headlam – to make it 5-4 and threaten an incredible comeback.

But Havant star man Ahmed Ezz Mohamed completed his hat-trick by scoring within a minute of Headlam’s 59th minute strike and then added a 68h minute goal from open play to take his personal tally to four consigning Plymouth to defeat and relegation.

Giles has now scored 13 league goals for Plymouth.

Promoted Plymouth Marjon A clinched the N4 Premier Three title with a 1-1 draw at basement side City of Bath, where Dave Langton scored a last minute leveller.

Plymouth Marjon D won 5-0 at Tavistock in South Western District One thanks to four goals – including a stunning top corner strike – from teenage hot shot Tim Orman.
