Charlton took the lead against the run of play in the 41st minute when Chris Solly’s cross from the right was headed home by 19 goals top scorer Lyle Taylor.
The Addicks increased their lead in the 49th minute after brilliant wing play from Jonny Williams, who jinked in from the left beating players, before crossing to the near post where Igor Vetokele turned the ball in.
Argyle will be wondering how they trailed after dominating the opening spell and Ruben Lameiras won a 39th minute penalty, conceded by Krystian Bielik.
Graham Carey’s spot kick was saved by Dillon Phillips.
Just after Argyle striker Freddie Ladapo missed from close range. Immediately Charlton countered down the right, and scored their opener.
Charlton could have made it 3-0 but Joe Aribo’s 55th minute goal-bound strike was saved by diving Matt Macey.
In the opening spell Phillips had to make smart saves to deny Carey and Ladapo.
Playmaker Carey (pictured) set the tone for the opening 40 minutes with a cheeky chip, which flew just over.
With five games to play Argyle are four points above fourth from bottom AFC Wimbledon.
Argyle boss Derek Adams: “If you don’t take your opportunities when they come along then the other team are always going to get one, and they got theirs in the 41st minute and took full advantage.”
Attendance 10, 696 (817 Charlton fans)
