SW GOLF Cooper and Somerset new U18s champions

South Western Counties Golf Association shieldWiltshire's James Cooper is the 2017 South West U18 boys champion.

The 17-year-old Cumberwell Park ace backed up a scorching morning four under 66 with a superb afternoon 69 at Came Down Golf Club, near Dorchester, to win the regional championship by two strokes from Sherborne’s Tom Plumb.

Plumb was top scorer in the Somerset six who claimed the U18s boys team title by eight shots from runners-up Wiltshire and now represent the South West at the English Boys County Championship at the Northamptonshire County GC from August 29-31.

The triumphant Somerset team also included Enmore Park’s Taylor Stote who finished third in the individual event with the day’s only other sub-par 36 holes total, 139.

Gloucestershire’s Jack Cope finished level par and fourth overall after topping the leaderboard with Cooper on 66.

English County finalists Somerset dominated the men’s South West county amateur championships at Weston-super-Mare last month.
