Somerset’s Simon Mantell was the match-winner as Great Britain beat Pakistan 2-1 in their Champions Trophy opener in Auckland, New Zealand.
Reading forward Mantell roofed the winning 65th minute goal after East Grinstead’s Mark Pearn cancelled out Muhammad Imran’s first half opener.

University of Exeter warmed up for Saturday’s eagerly-anticipated clash at home to England Hockey League leaders East Grinstead with a creditable 1-1 draw at Surbiton.
Rob Mugridge scored the greens opening goal four minutes into the second half and although Surbiton – who started the day fifth – replied through Ben Tibble in the 48th minute, the students picked up their first valuable point in four Men’s Premier Division matches.

University of Exeter skipper Olly Deasy was full of praise for his team as the greens marked their England Hockey League top flight return with a pulsating 3-2 home win over Reading.
Deasy said: “It was a fantastic opening day result against a very good team. The boys played superbly and a 3-2 win is a brilliant way to start the season, especially against a team of the calibre of Reading.
