Having qualified fastest for the final, the world record holder from Exeter dominated from the gun before touching in 24.50 – the fourth fastest time of his career and his quickest for two years.

TANCOCK SIXTH IN WORLD 100 FINAL

exeter's world champion 50m backstroke swimmer liam tancockExeter's Commonwealth champion Liam Tancock narrowly missed out on the 100m Backstroke medals on day three of the 2011 FINA World Swimming Championships in Shanghai.

The British Gas ITC Loughborough swimmer, who will begin the defence of his world 50m Backstroke title on Saturday, clocked a season’s best 53.25 from lane one to finish just 0.26 off the podium positions in China.

DEVON SWIMMERS TEAM UP FOR ENGLAND BRONZE

Exeter's double Commwealth Games backstroke gold medallist Liam Tancock and Plymouth Leander's butterfly silver medallist Antony James teamed up for England to win bronze medals in the men's 4x 100m medley relay at the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games.

Tancock put England ahead after the first 100 in 53.66 and James kept England in the hunt for silver in the third leg but England (3.36.31)  just missed out with South Africa claiming silver in 3.36.12.

WEST TRIO GET WORLD JUNIOR CALL

The Great Britain team for August's 3rd FINA World Junior Swimming Championships in Lima, Peru, will include Plymouth Leander's rising young star Grant Halsall and Bath teenage swiming sensation Siobhan-Marie O'Connor.

The 18-strong squad announced by British Swimming also includes Amelia Maughan (Millfield/British Gas ITC Bath) as well as new senior national 200 metres individual medley champion O’Connor (TeamBath/Bath University).

LIAM TANOCK celebrates golden Games

South West swim star Liam Tanock made it another golden day for Team England in the Delhi pool by winning the XIX Commonwealth Games men's 100m backstroke in record time.

Tancock - from Exeter - saw off his final rivals with a superb swim to touch first in a new Commonwealth record 53.59 and add another Games gold medal to the one he raced to in the 50m backstroke.

PLYMOUTH'S JAMES FLYS TO WORLD FINALS

The Plymouth Leander swimmer led from gun to wall, ultimately touching in a season’s best 52.13 at Pond’s Forge, Sheffield.

FLY GUY JAMES WINS SILVER MEDAL

The 20-year-old Plymothian touched home in 52.50 along with Ryan John Pini (Papua New Guinea) in the men's 100m butterfly final behind gold medal winner Geoff Huegill (Australia).
