Euan Woods kept Berkshire in the hunt for a fifth straight National Counties Championship with a brilliant all-round performance in their Western Division One match against Cheshire at the Falkland club in Newbury.After Cheshire slow left-armer David Wainwright had returned his Championship-best figures of six for 38 to help dismiss Berkshire for 190 in their first innings, Woods then triggered a collapse which saw Cheshire lose their last seven wickets for 15 runs.

Oxfordshire improved their prospects of topping Western Division One of the National Counties Championship and reaching next month’s final by dismissing Dorset for 129 on the opening day at Wimborne.Despite fielding a much-changed side to the one that ended Berkshire’s seven-year unbeaten run last week, Oxfordshire soon had Dorset in trouble at 22 for four after their hosts had won the toss.

Bedfordshire and Herefordshire secured the two promotion places in the new National Counties Championship with comfortable victories over Northumberland and Wales NC in the penultimate round of matches.Bedfordshire completed their season with an innings and 50 runs win over Northumberland at Jesmond. Their unassailable lead at the top of Eastern Division Two was confirmed while they were heading home down the A1 when Buckinghamshire were beaten by 158 runs by Cumbria at Furness.

Berkshire’s 36-match unbeaten record - which stretches back to August 2014 - is under threat after Oxfordshire dismissed them for 140 and then turned a first innings lead of 154 into 419 by the close thanks to a composed century from Ollie Ebsworth-Burland on his home club ground at Thame.Ebsworth-Burland also made a second innings century on his only previous appearance for Oxfordshire – also at Thame – two years ago and, having made 81 in the first innings of this match he again prospered against a Berkshire side hoping to win the Championship for a record fifth consecutive time.
