NATIONAL COUNTIES Championship day one round-up

NCCA-Logo MasterOxfordshire improved their prospects of topping Western Division One of the National Counties Championship and reaching next month’s final by dismissing Dorset for 129 on the opening day at Wimborne. 

Despite fielding a much-changed side to the one that ended Berkshire’s seven-year unbeaten run last week, Oxfordshire soon had Dorset in trouble at 22 for four after their hosts had won the toss.

CRICKET Herefordshire win promotion to Western One

NCCA-Logo MasterBedfordshire and Herefordshire secured the two promotion places in the new National Counties Championship with comfortable victories over Northumberland and Wales NC in the penultimate round of matches.

Bedfordshire completed their season with an innings and 50 runs win over Northumberland at Jesmond. Their unassailable lead at the top of Eastern Division Two was confirmed while they were heading home down the A1 when Buckinghamshire were beaten by 158 runs by Cumbria at Furness.

NATIONAL COUNTIES Day two review & scores

NCCA-Logo MasterBerkshire’s 36-match unbeaten record - which stretches back to August 2014 -  is under threat after Oxfordshire dismissed them for 140 and then turned a first innings lead of 154 into 419 by the close thanks to a composed century from Ollie Ebsworth-Burland on his home club ground at Thame. 

Ebsworth-Burland also made a second innings century on his only previous appearance for Oxfordshire – also at Thame – two years ago and, having made 81 in the first innings of this match he again prospered against a Berkshire side hoping to win the Championship for a record fifth consecutive time.

NATIONAL COUNTIES Oxfordshire tame champions

NCCA-Logo MasterOxfordshire again proved a thorn in the side of defending champions Berkshire as they took the first day honours at Thame in Western Division One. 

Opener Ollie Ebsworth-Burland again enjoyed himself on his home club ground by anchoring Oxfordshire’s first innings with 81. Ebsworth-Burland made a century on his only previous county appearance two years ago, also at Thame.

NATIONAL COUNTIES Berkshire beat Wales in semis

Holders Berkshire produced a typically resilient and reNCCA-Logo Mastersourceful performance to reach the final of the National Counties Trophy with a 62 runs win over Wales at NC at Port Talbot in the semi-finals.

Although Berkshire’s total of 182 for nine, in a match reduced by rain to 40 overs, seemed moderate they defended it superbly with their quartet of spinners - left-armers Chris Peploe and Luke Beaven and off-spinners Euan Woods and Max Uttley - throttling Wales’ run chase.

NATIONAL COUNTIES CHAMPIONSHIP third round round-up

NCCA-Logo MasterDefending champions Berkshire romped to a 253 runs win over Dorset in Western Division One at Finchampstead where spinners Euan Woods, Luke Beaven and Chris Peploe took all but one of the second innings wickets. 

Former Hampshire batsman Oli Soames made 44 which frustrated Berkshire for a time before lunch but once he had followed Luke Webb back to the pavilion the writing was on the wall.
